3: Schwingungen on track (german) .
The
try-out of our "Schwingungen"-event went excellent,"
says the Herner sound artist Christof Schläger. "I
think we can look forward to a successful concert
on a wonderfull first October evening." That was not
obviously, because there were a lot of testing at
past wednesday afternoon at the Cranger locks of the
Rhine-Herne Canal, the location of Schwingungen-event.
New sound instruments, freshly-baked from the atelier
of the artist, which had to bring their acoustical
abilities to the test open-air - these so-called "branes",
percussion-like objects, exists of plane cylinders
which are stretched across with synthetic foils and
compressed air brings the "branes" to vibrate . Also:
new pipes, which the artist has constructed from iron
tubes and gutters; and the shipshorns, as they were
already used last month at "Extraschicht" on the World
Heritage Site Zollverein Essen, although presently
they came in a powerfuller version made of copper
funnels instead of the previously used synthetic resin.
"Beside
it, we wanted to estimate, how far the tone of the
sound island reaches, which we using with the help
of the Herner-Wanner railcompany, assembled on a riding
carriage", said Schläger. Results: excellent! The
cooperation with the men from the traincompany worked
brilliantly. And by the artist desired effect - a
multi-faceted, extremely moving acoustic interaction
between the stationary and the riding sound island
- turned exactly as hoped for: For anyone who moves
along on the canal bank during the concert and maybe
even closes his eyes, the ever-changing echo patterns
open oneself for the continuously unexpected living
auditive images of the environment. Even an unforeseen
occur vessel while the try-out enriched this scene
to new, fascinating reflections and refractions -
almost as if the passage was intended.
The "Schwingungen"-event on 1 October, by the way
deliberate pronounced as a concert and not conceptialized as an elitist high culture happening, is Schläger
biggest project till now - more than ten companies are contributing to its success. The company Schwing arrange
about seven concrete pumps available - with arms up to 50 meters high, which during the concert in accordance
with a mysterious choreography of the Dutch artist Marjon Smit will swing to the music. Evonik will subtly
illuminate the black coal piles in the back of the audience, the metal finishing company Bötzel clears the
"podium" at the channel bank of old rails, in order to expand the public accessible soundroom, and
pyrotechnicians will take care of the suitable illumination of the dam-wall. The Herner-Wanner railwaycompany
provide not only the diesel locomotive, wagon and driver - but also takes care of the blocking of the railway
tracks."To coordinate all of that is a very complex task. Therefore, I am very happy that today, everything went
so smoothly," said Schläger. "I thank all those involved very kindly."
