Description
Listen up! There's more to the city than noise pollution. This concert from Christof Schläger and Marjon Smit
is a special concept for Shanghai. It is a special set up with 64 horns installed in the middle of a great
square. The horns are directing to the four winds, playing with the reverberations of the surrounding buildings,
changing them to a sounding sky scraper cathedral. This reverberations materialize also the impression of several
"virtual" instruments, you have the feeling of a spread out orchestra in the city. The hearers can walk during
the concert, came closer or move away, exploring that very important spatial element of the reverberation composition.
The melodies and rhythms reflecting off the architectural surface, playing compositions with incredibly energetic
rhythmical structures, producing an attractive firework of aural textures - the "Magic Square".

A horn group consists of 64 horns, small,
modified ship’s horns. 32 horns have copper bells whose sound color is reminiscent of trumpets.
Each wind machine is powered by a portable air compressor of the type used in road construction
with a minimum pressure of 7 bar or 100 psi (pounds per square inch) and an air flow capacity
of 1.000 to 2000 CFM (cubic feet per minute), These units have an operating dBA as low as 64 db
which significantly reduces the incidence of unwanted noise. The ship’s horns are tuned diatonically
and are controlled by a computer.
